1895 (JU 16) registered cover from Salisbury to Ipswich, bearing 1892 ½d on 6d ultramarine (lower marginal), 4d on 6d ultramarine, and 8d on 1s grey-brown, tied by individual strikes of 'SALISBURY / MASHONALAND' with further very fine strike below, together with 4d blue registered postal stationery envelope to the same address, franked by 1892-93 2s6d lilac, tied by the same cds with further strike alongside and London registered oval transit (20 JY) ds below, the reverse with Cape Town registered oval transit (JY 3) and Ipswich arrival (JY 20) cancels and two BSAC wax seals. Minor cover blemishes, but a fascinating insight into the philatelic workings of the BSAC at this time and an unmissable opportunity to acquire such scarce and philatelically important covers. [N.B. Apart from the matching addresses and date of postmark on each cover, the smaller of the two shows no trace of actually travelling through the postal service, i.e. no registration markings and no transit or arrival cancellations. Additionally, the 2s6d franking of the registered envelope suggests it contained several other covers, the letter rate to England being 6d per ½oz.] - P267000792
