JAMAICA 1896 Cover from New York to Kingston recovered from the wreck of the 'Ailsa'

1896 (FEB 24) cover (yellow envelope) from New York to Kingston, recovered from the wreck of the S.S. 'Ailsa' on 29 February with the adhesive stamp washed off. The reverse with printed post office label inscribed 'This article of Mail matter has been recovered from the wreck of S.S. "Ailsa" which sunk in New York Harbour on 29th February, 1896. / GEO. H. PEARCE, P.M. Jamaica. / G.P.O. Jamaica, 17th April, 1896.', tied by Kingston cds, dated 'AP 18 96'. Typical insignificant blemishes as to be expected from such an item, but rare and spectacular. Only about 10 such covers are recorded. [N.B. The Atlas steamer 'Ailsa' was struck, in thick fog, whilst at anchor in New York harbour by the French transatlantic steamer 'La Bourgoyne'. Although heavily damaged, the captain was able to beach the vessel around 300 yards from shore from where the passengers and crew were rescued.] - P212012866
