| 1931 (12 NOV) charred and scorched airmail cover from Durban to England, endorsed 'PER AIR MAIL TO CAPE TOWN', franked by 1929 Air 4d green and 1930-44 2d slate-grey and lilac, tied by individual strikes of despatch cds with black/blue air mail label at lower left. Salvaged from the wreck of the South African Union Airways flight from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town, which crashed over Sir Lowry's Pass on Friday, 13 November, just 30 miles from its destination. The pilot, Capt W.F. Davenport, and both passengers were killed, and almost all mail was incinerated and lost. A rare survivor, with photocopy of ambulance letter from the Department of Posts & Telegraphs. |
