SOUTH AFRICA 1938 SGO14, O16, O20 Cover

Official. 1938 (23 NOV) registered OHMS cover from Pretoria to Lausanne, franked by 1930-47 2d and 6d English singles and 1935-49 ¬Ωd Afrikaans single, tied by legible "UNION BUILDINGS / PRETORIA" cds (two better strikes on reverse), with light violet registration H/S and oval Interior Dept cachet on face, and "10.XII.38" arrival backstamps. Damaged in transit and resealed at lower right corner by Swiss black/white perforated labels, tied back and front by further Lausanne cds, with fine two-line instructional H/S "ENVOI PARVENU DEFECTUEUX / AU BUREAU DE LAUSANNE" on reverse. Slight faults inclg vertical cover fold, and the stamps difficult to identify with precision, still an unusual and interesting usage. Ex Matheson. - P212009794
