| Falkland Islands Company Provisional. 1972 (8 MY) cover addressed to 'Medical Department, Stanley', unfranked but with very fine strike of 'FALKLAND ISLANDS Co. LTD / * / PORT STANLEY' oval handstamp in red at upper right, with type PS3D cds alongside. Fine and scarce. [In March 1972 the stock of ½p and 1p stamps was running low. In order to prevent an exhaustion, the Falkland Islands Company, as the principal user of the 1p value for internal mail, returned its stock of 1p stamps to the Post Office and was authorised to use its office handstamp as a means of franking its postal correspondence. Two handstamps were authorised for use, one in the head office and the other at West Store. This provisional usage lasted from 3 April to 31 May, with 482 covers (both handstamps) recorded as being franked in this period.] |
